Skin Darkening and Changes Around Ankles

What does skin darkening mean when seen around the ankles and legs? A condition known as venous stasis dermatitis is due to advanced vein disease. In end stage vein disease, skin breakdown and weeping wounds may appear. This presentation is usually preceded by skin changes such as dark spots, thickening of the skin around the legs and ankles, reddish skin with blotchy appearance, etc.

If you notice persistent skin changes around the ankles and legs, it may be worthwhile getting a consult and ultrasound. An ultrasound can easily confirm the presence of vein disease.
